"Hot-blooded! Akane's treasure hunting life!!" (熱血!あかねの宝さがし人生!! Nekketsu! Akane no takara sagashi jinsei!!?) is the 40th episode of Smile Pretty Cure!, the 32nd episode of Glitter Force, and also the 429th episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall. The English title is "The Greatest Treasure".

Synopsis[]

During an essay competition, Akane is left wondering what her treasure is and attempts to find it.

Summary[]

Hino Akane lands an impressive spike in volleyball practice. Her friends, fellow Pretty Cures, are there to cheer her on.

In class, the girls appear to be are hiding something from Akane. She notices that Miyuki's hands are covered in band-aids. Akane assumes Miyuki accidentally cut her fingers while making dinner.

In class, the girls are assigned a writing project on the theme "My Treasure". Hidekazu says his treasure is his guitar, Shirou his telescope, Kiyomi the matching keyholders she got with Mayu during the field trip, Tadaaki his judo black belt, and Satoshi his save game data.

However, Akane isn't sure what her treasure is, and decides to find an answer for herself.

In the Bad End Kingdom, Joker calls on Wolfrun. He warns him that Emperor Pierrot is angry with his failures, and that this is his final chance. Joker orders him to choose one of the Pretty Cures and eliminate them. Holding a grudge against Cure Sunny for defeating him during Candy's rescue, he chooses her.

On the roof at lunch, the girls discuss their treasure. Miyuki's is a copy of Cinderella she received from her grandmother as a child, Nao's is her soccer cleats, Yayoi's is the photo she took with Taiyouman, Reika's is her family's household scroll, and Candy's is the Royal Clock. Miyuki suggests it should be something exciting that she never wants to lose. However, Akane can't decide what that is for her. She considers volleyball and okonomiyaki important, but questions whether those are really "treasures".

Letter

The letter that Brian sent to Akane

The girls visit Akane's okonomiyaki restaurant. Just then, Akane's mother reveals that she's received a letter in English, which must be from Brian. The girls misinterpret "Dear Akane" to mean that Brian holds her dear, and the word "like" to mean a confession of love; however, Reika soon corrects them. Candy suggests this letter is Akane's treasure, but she still isn't sure.

The charm

The charm that everyone did for Akane

As the girls leave, they reveal they came to give her a gift: a hand-made charm for good luck at tomorrow's volleyball match. She realizes that Miyuki's bandages were because she hurt her hands sewing it. Akane rushes forward and hugs the girls, overjoyed to receive it. Yayoi designed it, Reika picked out the materials, Nao taught everyone how to sew. Akane declares that she hs finally found her treasure.

SmPC40 Sunny argues with Wolfrun

Cure Sunny Attacks

The next day, Wolfrun appears at the volleyball game to ambush Akane. He creates a Bad End Space, drawing despair from the assembled players. Wolfrun promises to destroy everything Akane holds dear. Akane transforms into Cure Sunny, and Wolfrun uses a Black Nose to turn a volleyball into a Hyper Akanbe.

Sunny attempts to fight the Akanbe solo, but struggles against the enraged Wolfrun. From the school, her friends spot the Bad End Space centered around the sports center where the volleyball game is scheduled. Realizing that Akane must be fighting alone, the girls head there.

SmPC40 Sunny performs Sunny Fire Burning

Cure Sunny's ultimate form

In the fight, Sunny's charm becomes detached from her gym bag, and Wolfrun grabs it. Sunny calls it her treasure, and demands Wolfrun give it back. This only encourages Wolfrun to destroy it, and Sunny's heart breaks as he throws the broken charm to the ground in front of her. Wolfrun stomps Sunny into the ground, leaving a giant crater.

Sunny remembers the effort her friends went to to make the charm. Wolfrun threatens to defeat Cure Happy next, stomping off to find her. Although she's frightened and shaking, Sunny stands to her feet and fights Wolfrun, because losing her friends is even more frightening to her than fighting him. She declares her friends to be her treasures, and she is a thousand times stronger with them at her side.

As Wolfrun attacks, Sunny is surrounded by flame. A new Decor appears in her Smile Pact, unlocking her ultimate power. Wolfrun, on his last chance, has no choice but to fight her, but now the two are evenly matched. A glowing Cure Sunny uses the last of her strngth to launch her new ultimate attack, a massive fireball called Sunny Fire Burning.

At first it seems like the attack worked, but Wolfrun withstands and launches a huge blast of dark energy at Sunny. Luckily, the other four Cures appear just in time to protect their friend. They defeat the Akanbe with Royal Rainbow Burst. A defeated Wolfrun flees, fearful of how Joker will punish him now.

Akane

With the battle over, Akane laments that her charm was destroyed. Miyuki and the others offer to make a new one, but Akane wants to keep it even though it's damaged. She realizes that she's found her treasure after all. Miyuki asks what her treasure is, but she insists it's a secret. She embraces her friends with a smile.

Trivia[]

  • This episode introduces the Cures' upgraded attacks, starting with Cure Sunny.
  • Cure Sunny is the first Smile! Cure to achieve her upgraded attack, rather than the lead Cure achieving it first.
  • This episode makes several callbacks to previous episodes:

    • Akane refuses to tell the secret she discovered, episode 10, where she keeps her father's okonomiyaki ingredient a secret.
    • Toyoshima Hidekazu mentions his guitar, which was the focus in episode 34. Onoushiro Kiyomi mentions the matching keyholders she got with Okada Mayu during the school trip, which took place in episode 14 where they were seen together.
    • Miyuki's treasure references how her grandmother introduced her to fairy tales as a child, revealed in episode 27; the time Yayoi met Taiyouman; and Reika's family scroll, shown in episode 6.
  • This is one of at least four episodes to have shown the psychological genre, the other episodes being 22, 42 and 48.
  • This episode is the last appearance of the regular Cure Sunny eyecatch.
  • When Akane makes okonomiyaki, the she strikes the same pose she does in the opening. This follows the previous episode, which featured Miyuki's appearance as Cinderella from the opening.

  • The opening sequence to this episode features clips from the Smile Pretty Cure! movie, released on October 27, 2012.
  • The letter Akane receives from Brian reads as follows:

    "Dear Akane,

Thank you very much for everything you did to me when I was in Japan. I really appreciate your kindness and everyone of 2 nen 2 kumi. Especially Akane's smiling face is like sun, and makes me happy everytime I remember it. I'm studying Japanese hard. I am a fan of all Japanese culture such as Kendo, Sado, Volleyball, Okonomiyaki that Akane intruduced [sic] to me. I just started taking lessons of karate. That's also one of wonderful Japanese culture.

I wish I could go back to Japan sometime."
