Synopsis[]

Akane gets to know a new student, a young man named Brian who is visiting Japan for a few weeks. In this time she begins denying her growing feelings for him until she is overwhelmed by sadness knowing he will be leaving soon.

Summary[]

SmPC36Akane

Akane confused

On her way home from school, Akane is practicing her volleyball moves when she trips on a rock and falls. A passing young man, a foreigner who speaks English, helps her up. Akane finds herself thinking about him even after he leaves.

The following morning, Akane is still thinking about the incident when to her surprise, the boy walks into the class. He is introduced as Brian Taylor, an exchange student from England, who will join the class for three weeks. Akane recognizes him, and the teacher suggests she show him around the school.

Akane, whose worst subject is English, asks her friends to help, but they're busy—Reika and Nao have club duties, while Miyuki promised Yayoi they would watch the Robotter DVD together.

Brian introduces himself to Akane, but she struggles with English. She shows him around the school, doing her best to explain in English. Brian hopes to see samurai, so Akane shows him kendo club, a tea ceremony, and the kyudo or archery club, where he mistakes Reika for a "ninja girl". As the sun sets, Brian spots a volleyball in the yard and they throw it for a while. Akane invites Brian to attend the volleyball club.

The girls asking Akane if she has a crush on Brian

At the secret base, Yayoi is the first to notice that Akane talks a lot about Brian lately. She suspects that Akane has feelings for Brian, and when the girls confront her about it, she blushes, which only confirms their suspicions. The girls encourage Akane to confess.

Yayoi's drawing of Akane and Brian

At school, the girls try to help Akane confess to Brian. Miyuki deploys "Operation Cinderella", throwing Akane's indoor shoe so that Brian will return it. He does, but to no effect. Nao tries demonstrating a direct confession, but she's too shy to do it. Yayoi suggests drawing, but Akane's drawing skills are poor. Reika suggests writing a letter, but Akane can't do it with everyone watching.

Brian at the Midorikawa house

That evening, Akane happens to meet Brian looking for a Japanese restaurant. She invites him to her okonomiyaki restaurant. Brian is grateful, and asks Akane if she will teach him more about Japan and the Japanese language. He goes on to meet Nao's family, try out at the kyudo club with Reika, pose for Yayoi, read fairy tales with Miyuki.

SmPC36AkaneSunset

Akane sad about Brian leaving

Together, Akane and Brian eat at a fast food restaurant, visit a zoo, and run on the beach. One day, as they admire the setting sun, Brian reminds Akane that his three-week visit to Japan is coming to an end. Akane realizes she had forgotten that he was leaving, and watches with a broken heart as he walks away.

Meanwhile, Wolfrun watches a romance drama on TV, remarking on how he finds the concept of love pointless.

As Brian leaves on the final day, the class comes to see him off. He is surprised to see Akane is not there. The girls meet her practicing volleyball underneath the bridge. She denies her feelings for Brian, but Miyuki realizes that she's hiding her true self.

Beneath the sightseeing post where Akane and Brian last met, two lovers meet for a date. One wears a key-shaped necklace that the other got her for as a gift. Wolfrun, disgusted by their love, summons Bad End Space. The girls appear and transform into Pretty Cures. Wolfrun transforms the girl's necklace into a Hyper Akanbe and merges with it.

SmPC36FireSword

Cure Sunny's Fire sword

The girls fight Wolfrun, who criticizes romance as a waste of time that will inevitably end in a break-up. The argument distracts Cure Sunny, who is punched into a wall. The girls have trouble finding a good counter-argument.

Sunny gets to her feet to defend love, entering a duel with Wolfrun. Candy uses the Sports Decor to give Sunny a kendo sword. Sunny uses fire to ignite the sword into a flaming blade. She fights the Akanbe, asserting that even if it ends, the moments she shared aren't a waste of time. Sunny knocks the Akanbe aside, allowing the girls to defeat it with Royal Rainbow Burst.

SmPC36AkaneRunning

Akane running to the airport

Akane realizes that she has to run to the airport to see Brian before he leaves. Her friends help her along the way: Nao helps run to flag down the bus, Reika lends her money for bus fare, Miyuki lends her a bicycle when the bus gets stuck in traffic, and Yayoi draws her a map. When the chain breaks, Akane runs the rest of the way.

SmPC36AkaneBrianAirplane

Akane saying goodbye to Brian

At the airport, Akane watches as the plane takes off in the distance, crying as she believes Brian is on it. Just then, Brian offers a hand, just as when they first met. As the sun sets, Brian thanks Akane for helping him fall in love with Japan, and Akane thanks him too.

Trivia[]

  • The opening sequence to this episode features clips from the Smile Pretty Cure! movie, released on October 27, 2012. This would continue up to episode 40, with the normal opening returning on episode 41.
  • Akane's weakness at English was previously noted in episode 16, where she failed to correctly translate the English phrase "My name is Cure Sunny". In this episode, she gets it correct.
  • The mecha anime Tetsujin Senshi Robotter, which formed the focus of the previous episode, is mentioned again in this episode.
  • In this episode, Akane is in the center when the girls transform. This occurred in the previous episode, where Yayoi was in the center due to her strong motivation.
  • Several scenes in this episode take place before a sunset. This is appropriate to Akane, since according to her mother she was named Akane for the color of sunset.
  • The Smile Pretty Cure novel depicts the girls' lives ten years after the series. Brian returns to Japan and lives with Akane as part of a homestay program. Akane confesses her love, but Brian returns to London to teach Japanese.
  • This is the last episode to be omitted in the English dub Glitter Force. This is probably due to the romance plot.
