"Story! A Period Drama in the Movie Village-degozaru!?" (映画村で時代劇でござる!?の巻! Eigamura de jidaigeki degozaru!? no maki!?) is the 33rd episode of Smile Pretty Cure!, and also the 422nd episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall.

Synopsis[]

The girls help out in a movie starring Pop.

Summary[]

The girls go on a tour of a period drama village where filming is being conducted for a new movie. Miyuki mistakenly thinks the monsters on the set are real, almost transforming into Cure Happy to fight them when the crew remind her they're filming a movie.

Later, a director sees the girls pretending to be characters from a movie, and invites them to be in his movie. They change into period costumes. Pop transforms into a human dresed as a samurai, and is also invited to join.

The girls are given almost no time to learn their lines, and go wildly off-script, with Pop improvising an entire fight scene. The crew is stunned, and the girls are sure they'll get in trouble, but the director loves it and invites them to appear in more scenes.

Akaoni watching the tv

Meanwhile, while watching TV, Akaoni sees a commercial for the period drama village, featuring a monster called Aooni. Mistaking Aooni for a real oni like himself, he flies down to meet him. Just then he spots the Pretty Cure in the distance, but assumes he's mistaken and brushes it off.

Between scenes, the girls admire just how much effort goes into producing a movie, and how everyone's attention to detail is reflected in the finished product. They begin filming the final scene when Akaoni joins, mistaking the film monsters for the real thing. Akaoni begins smashing up the set, causing the "monsters" to flee, but the director loves it and keeps filming. The Pretty Cures stand up to Akaoni, explaining to his surprise that it's just a film set.

Pop appears and makes a heroic speech, causing all the villagepeople and monsters to join his side against Akaoni. Disappointed to learn that the monsters aren't real, Akaoni creates a Bad End Space and sucks Bad End Energy from the cast and crew. The girls transform, and Akaoni uses a Black Nose to create a Hyper Akanbe from a film camera before merging with it.

The camera Akanbe has the power to freeze, stop and rewind the Pretty Cures, making them unable to attack. Just then, Pop appears to duel the Akanbe, but his prop sword breaks on the Akanbe's nose. Candy uses the elephant decor to spray water on the Akanbe, which damages its electricals. Akaoni accidentally presses the fast-forward button, and finds himself fighting the Pretty Cure at double speed. Determined to protect all the hard work of the movie crew, the girls Royal Rainbow Burst to defeat the Hyper Akanbe and collect a new decor.

Ep33

Pop retrieves the movie

With the film completed and Akaoni gone, Pop steals the video tape from the camera to avoid the girls identities being ruined or revealing that they're Pretty Cure. He promises to edit the footage and return it to the director later on.

Later, the girls attend an advance screening of the movie, but they realize that Pop edited the movie to make himself the main focus of the entire film and remove the parts they were in, causing Akane to get frustrated.

Trivia[]

  • The black-beaked movie characters at the beginning are tengu, a type of creature previously mentioned in episode 27. That episode establishes that Miyuki believes youkai are real, which may explain why she attempts to fight them in this episode.
  • Aside from in this episode, Miyuki's wish to be in a movie would come true about four weeks later on October 27, 2012, with the cinema release of the Smile Pretty Cure movie.
  • The title of the movie—Youkai All Stars DX—may be a reference to the Pretty Cure All Stars DX series of crossover movies. Another movie appearing in a poster is titled Futari wa Kunoichi, likely a reference to Futari wa Pretty Cure.
  • Two catchphrases are parodied in this episode: "Once again I have cut a worthless object," said by Ishikawa Goemon on Lupin III; and "Oh, how wonderful movies really are!" said by movie critic Mizuno Haruo on Friday Road Show.
  • This is the fourth episode that the Akanbe eyecatch makes an appearance in.
  • This episode was omitted in the English dub Glitter Force. This may be due to its heavy focus on Japanese culture.
  • The idea of the episode was proposed by a Toei producer, who wanted a promotional tie-in for the Kyoto Uzumasa Eiga Mura, a theme park similar to the one depicted in the show, and based on Toei's samurai movies.[1]
