"Summer magic!? Grandma's treasure" (夏のふしぎ!?おばあちゃんのたからもの Natsu no fushigi!? Obā-chan no takaramono?) is the 27th episode of the Smile Pretty Cure!, and also the 416th episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall.

Synopsis[]

The girls pay Tae Hoshizora, Miyuki's grandmother a visit up in the mountains. There, they try to find her "secret treasure" when she refuses to move in with Miyuki's family, rather than be there by herself.

Miyuki brings her friends to visit her grandmother in the countryside. They struggle to walk in the summer heat, and they stop to cool off at the river. An elderly lady warns them that a kappa might appear and pull them in. Miyuki recognizes the lady as her grandmother, Hoshizora Tae.

They arrive at Miyuki's grandmother's house and admire the beautiful countryside. She invites them to the riverbank, where she is chilling vegetables in the water. Nao notices a shrine and wonders if kappas are real. Tae gives Miyuki a cucumber, which she floats down the river as an offering to appease the kappa. Miyuki reveals that her grandmother told her many stories as a child, including ones where children are saved by a kappa, a tengu, and a zashiki-warashi. Reika suggests that this is the origin of Miyuki's love of fairy tales. Miyuki believes that youkai are kind, and bring gifts to those who are kind to them.

Candy

The girls freak out when Tae brings food for Candy

That night at dinner, Tae sets an additional place for Candy. Miyuki insists Candy is just a plushie, but Tae doesnt believe her.

After dinner, Miyuki reveals the purpose of her visit: Miyuki's parents are worried that Tae, getting older, may have trouble coping by herself in the countryside, and they want to invite her to live with them in the city. Tae declines, saying that she is surrounded by "treasures". Miyuki asks what the treasures are, but she says it's a secret.

The next day, the girls help in the vegetable garden. Meanwhile, Wolfrun struggles with the summer heat and heads to the mountains, cooling off in the river when he is startled by something in the water. He runs away and coincidentally arrives at Tae's house. Tae notices that he is hungry and goes to fetch him some food. She isn't afraid of him, calling him a cute little fox.

Tae unaffected by the bad energy spell

Outraged, Wolfrun summons Bad End Space in an attempt to send Miyuki's grandmother into despair. He is startled when she is completely unaffected. He tries to get her down by predicting doom and gloom, but Tae's positive attitude is unbeatable.

When Tae goes to fetch Wolfrun some food, he turns an incense holder into a Super Akanbe, ordering it to destroy her house. The girls transform to fight it.

The Pretty Cures fight the Akanbe and push it away from the house. Cure Happy promises to protect her grandmother's treasures, which she believes to be her home, the fields, mountains and so on. While they debate whether those are her real treasures, the Akanbe blasts the Pretty Cures with a fireball and knock them down. They are unable to get up in time to stop the Akanbe from firing another fireball at Tae's house.

Miyuki

Suddenly, a blast of wind comes from the mountains and blows out the fireball, protecting the house and knocking the Akanbe into the river. Miyuki believes it is the tengu, from the stories her grandmother told her. A creature in the river also attacks the Akanbe. The girls use this opening to transform into their Princess Forms and defeat the Akanbe with Rainbow Burst, acquiring two Cure Decors.

Wolfrun retreats, and everything returns to normal. Tae steps out of her house with food for Wolfrun, but as he disappeared she gives it to the girls instead. A gentle wind blows from the mountains, which Tae takes as a reward from the mountain spirits for a good deed. Meanwhile at the river shrine, someone has left a reward of rice cakes, fish and wine.

Trivia[]

  • Miyuki's grandmother, Tae, is one of only eight human characters (other than the five Pretty Cures) shown to have the ability to resist the despair of Bad End Space. The others are the comedy duo FUJIWARA in episode 17 and the Midorikawa Siblings in episode 42. Candy believes that Tae's immunity is because she does not give in to despair.
    • In fact, Miyuki and her grandmother are the only two humans who are completely unaffected by a Bad End Space. The others, including the Pretty Cures, are initially affected but manage to break free. That said, even Miyuki was briefly affected in episode 22, due to Joker's manipulation.
  • Tae makes inarizushi, fried tofu sushi, for Wolfrun, although he leaves before he can eat them. Foxes are believed to be fond of this dish, which is said to be named for the Shinto deity Inari, who uses foxes as messengers.
  • In the Smile Pretty Cure! novel, Miyuki's grandma is shown still living by herself in the countryside ten years later.
  • Miyuki mentions three types of youkai from her grandma's stories:
    • The kappa, a water-dwelling creature who is fond of cucumber. In Japanese folklore, kappa sometimes attack humans, but at other times they help farmers irrigate their fields or leave gifts of fresh fish. The creature which appears in the water is implied to be a kappa.
    • The tengu, having the ability to control the wind. Miyuki suspects that the mysterious wind which saves Tae's house is sent by a tengu.
    • The zashiki-warashi, spirits who dwell within homes. One story tells that when an adult counts the number of children in a room, they will mistakenly count one more if a zashiki-warashi is in the room. This may explain why she sets an extra place at the table, but it may also be that Tae, who appears to believe in the existence of supernatural beings, is aware that Candy is more than just a plush toy.
  • This episode was omitted in the English dub Glitter Force. It may be that this episode was easy to cut, since it has relatively little connection to the overall plot, and the hands on the Bad End clock do not move. It may also be due to its reliance on Japanese mythology.
