Thank you Papa! Yayoi's Treasure (パパ、ありがとう!やよいのたからもの Papa, arigatō! Yayoi no takaramono?) is the 19th episode of Smile Pretty Cure!, and the 408th episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall.

Synopsis[]

When their class is asked to learn the meaning of their names, Yayoi struggles with personal feelings regarding her deceased father and a secret they shared.

Summary[]

One rainy day, the class is given a homework assignment to ask their parents the meanings of their names. Most of the class is excited, but Yayoi looks uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, Wolfrun reads a book of names to find out the meaning of his own name. He is surprised to find his name in the book, but discovers it means "short-tempered, violent, deceptive, incapable of loving or being loved". He accepts it, believing that love will be useless when the inevitable Bad End comes to the world.

While cooking dinner together, Yayoi asks her mother Chiharu what her name means. Chiharu confesses that she doesn't know because her father named her. It may remain a mystery, as Yayoi's father passed away when she was five, and she has only a few memories of him. Chiharu believes he explained Yayoi's name to her before he died, but she can't remember.

Yayoi finds her name in the dictionary

As Yayoi's friends talk to their parents out the meanings of their names, she looks up her name in a name dictionary and discovers that Yayoi is the old Japanese word for the month of March. She has a mysterious flashback to an old steepled building and the shadow of a tree on a brick path, but can't remember it in detail.

The next day in class, everyone gives their report. Miyuki was so named to mean "happiness", in the hopes that she would grow up finding happiness even in the toughest times. Reika, written with the kanji 「麗華」, mean "beautiful flower", and was given by her grandfather in the wish that she would grow up with a beautiful heart.

Yayoi says that her name means the third month, when flowers grow, and that her parents named her so that she would grow up with vitality. Miyuki thinks it suits her, but notices that Yayoi seems uncomfortable.

The girls walking in the rain

On the way home in the rain, Akane explains that her father wanted a name beginning with "A" so it was easy to call her, but her mother claims she chose it meaning madder, a red color, after the color of the sky when she was born, in the hopes she would grow up as beautiful as that sky. Nao, whose name means "straight", was named by her father in the hopes she would grow up to be straightforward and honest.

Yayoi admits the truth—she does not know why her father chose her name. She regrets not remembering more about her father. Nao encourages Yayoi to speak with her mother about him.

Yayoi finds her mother busy working at a father and child fashion show for Fairy Drop. They talk about Yayoi's father, and she expresses regret that she has lost so many of her memories of him. Chiharu shows her father's greatest treasure: a drawing Yayoi made for him as a child, and an origami fox. She remembers something about her father.

Akanbepuncpeace

Cure Peace fights the Akanbe

Suddenly, Wolfrun appears in the rafters and and sucks the Bad End energy from everyone at the fashion show. He turns the origami fox into an Akanbe. The girls join Yayoi and transform to fight it in the rain. Yayoi is upset to see the symbol of her love for her father turned into an enemy, and hesitates to fight it. She is knocked back and slides along a brick path, suddenly jogging a memory from a time with her father.

Atthechurch

Little Yayoi with her father

Yayoi remembers visiting a church with her father, where she pretends to marry him. She makes him promise to keep it a secret, so that her mother doesn't get jealous. He explains that her mother's name means "a thousand springs", so he named her Yayoi, another name meaning spring. Her name represented the gentleness he saw in her mother, and his hopes that she would grow up to be a gentle person too.

Yayoi's memories of her father return. She recalls her father's love, which fills her with newfound determination. She defeats the Akanbe using Peace Thunder, and for the first time she does not flinch when the lightning strikes her. The girls gain a brand new Cure Decor—the Cherry Decor. Wolfrun storms off, and everything returns to normal.

Yayoi meets up with her mother again, and shows her the church she visited with her father. Chiharu tells Yayoi she's grown up to be as kind as her father hoped, and Yayoi says she's grown to love her name. Chiharu says she also grown to love her name. As the girls look on, Reika says that naming is the first act of love parents give us. Yayoi looks to the sky and thanks her father.

Trivia[]

  • The is the first episode where the students switch to the summer uniform. The girls' uniform has shorter sleeves than the winter uniform, lacks a button on the shoulder, and uses a slightly lighter shade of blue. Yayoi wears a sweater vest instead of her usual cardigan, while Akane and Nao no longer use their sweater or vest. They continue to wear this uniform until episode 34, when they return to the long-sleeved winter uniform.
  • The fashion show featured in this episode is hosted by Fairy Drop, the family business of Kurumi Erika's parents from Heartcatch Pretty Cure!. Erika's character image song Special*Colorful was played as background music. In addition, when Kise Chiharu left the room to answer a phone call, the person she was talking to over the phone was a fashion designer by the name of "Kurumi".
  • This episode is one of the eight omitted from the English dub Glitter Force. This is likely to be due to the subject matter of a parent's death. The episode also relies heavily on the girls' Japanese names, although since Yayoi's English dub name is Lily, this may still have worked for her character.
  • This is the only episode where Cure Peace uses Peace Thunder without being shocked. In every other episode, she is startled when lightning strikes her, but in this episode she merely flinches.
  • It rains throughout this episode due to Japan's summer rainy season, which occurs approximately between June 7 and July 20. This episode originally aired on June 10, at beginning of the rainy season. The use of rain is also a metaphor for Yayoi's sadness, which clears at the end of the episode when she finally remembers her father's love.
  • This episode was written to coincide with Father's Day, which took place on 15 July 2012. Pretty Cure episodes are often written to match up with major Japanese holidays or annual events. Yayoi, a character raised by a single mother, was chosen to best explore the themes.[1]
