"She's Born! The Perfect Smile, Cure Happy!!" (誕生!笑顔まんてんキュアハッピー‼ Tanjō! Egao Manten Kyua Happī!!?) is the 1st episode of Smile Pretty Cure!, the 1st episode of Glitter Force, and the 390th episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall. This episode focuses on Hoshizora Miyuki transforming into Cure Happy. The English title from Glitter Force is "An Exciting Beginning".

Synopsis[]

While running late for her first day at a new school, Miyuki collides with a fairy named Candy. As she begins adjusting to her new home and school, Miyuki learns more about Candy before taking it upon herself to protect the world.

Summary[]

Hoshizora Miyuki, a second-year middle schooler who loves fairy tales, is running late to her first day of school, where she is a new transfer student. Nevertheless, she is optimistic and in good spirits, imagining that a wonderful encounter might await her just around the corner.

Suddenly she hears a cry in the distance, and spots a pink book fluttering down from the sky. It opens, revealing strange creature who pops out of the book and hits Miyuki in the face, knocking her over. Miyuki is enamored with the creature, who introduces herself as Candy, a fairy from Märchenland, the land of picture books. Miyuki, a fan of picture books, is excited, but Candy runs off when she isn't looking, leaving the book behind. Miyuki remembers that she's late for school and runs off too.

SmPC01 Miyuki panics while introducing herself

At school, Miyuki struggles to introduce herself due to nerves. Classmate Hino Akane steps up to help introduce her, joking that she must have a brother who enjoys stargazing named Hoshizora Mitaro (a pun, meaning "lets look at the stars"). Midorikawa Nao and class representative Aoki Reika interrupt Akane to suggest she allow Miyuki to introduce herself, and Akane introduces Nao, Reika, and finally herself. Kise Yayoi explains that Akane was just trying to help Miyuki become less nervous, and Akane in turn introduces Yayoi as a crybaby (though she insists she insists she has only cried three times).

The girls' introductions help Miyuki to overcome her nerves, and she introduces herself properly. A fan of picture books since childhood, she loves how they always have a happy end, and searches for that happiness in every day. She takes her seat behind Akane, when suddenly she spots Candy outside the window.

After school, Miyuki decides to explore the school by herself, hoping to find Candy again. She checks the music room, the science lab, and lastly the library, where she spots a glowing book titled The Magical Door. Pushing glowing books aside, a portal opens in the bookshelf and a glowing light pulls her inside.

Meanwhile, Candy is be searching for the Pretty Cure when she runs into the wolf-man Wolfrun, floating menacingly in the sky above the town.

Miyuki exits the portal and lands in the Magical Library, a massive store of books inside a huge tree. Returning Candy's book to a shelf, she hears Candy's voice on the other side. Pushing the books aside in the same pattern as before, she falls through a portal to a bookshelf outside a bookstore in the town's shopping district. There she meets Candy, who alerts her to Wolfrun's presence.

Wolfrun opens a book and blackens the pages with paint, turning the area into a dark space and filling everyone with inescapable despair. Candy explains that Wolfrun is trying to create a Bad End, and that the nearby people affected by despair are emanating Bad Energy, which Wolfrun will collect to revive the evil Emperor Pierrot.

Wolfrun spots Candy and the two debate the virtues of seeking happiness. Wolfrun believes a Bad End is inevitable, but Candy believes happiness is possible with effort. Miyuki takes Candy's side, recalling how her classmates helped her get over her nervousness earlier. She resolves to protect Candy from Wolfrun, and this triggers a magical light. A Smile Pact appears, and Candy reveals that this will allow Miyuki to transform into a legendary warrior known as a Pretty Cure. She transforms into Cure Happy.

Cure Happy is startled by the transormation, but overjoyed at the cute outfit. She runs away to hide behind a brick wall, citing the fairy tale The Three Little Pigs where the Big Bad Wolf couldn't blow down a brick house. Wolfrun laughs and uses a Red Nose to transform the wall into a monster called an Akanbe shaped like a house.

SmPC01 Happy jumps too high

Happy dodges the monster's attack by jumping, startled by her own strength as she leaps extremely high above the town. Wolfrun orders the Akanbe to jump after her, and she pushes it away at great force, surprising even Wolfrun with her power. She falls without injury, and, realizing that she just landed on the Akanbe, flees again.

SmPC01 Happy successfuly performs Happy Shower

Cure Happy performing Happy Shower

Candy tells Cure Happy that she can defeat the Akanbe it using her special purification move, Happy Shower. She tries, but the move fails because she didn't use enough fighting spirit. She flees again, but then resolves to fight, since running away wouldn't give a happy ending. The Smile Pact glows, and she charges it with fighting spirit, using Happy Shower successfully. A massive pink beam destroys the Akanbe, leaving behind a Cure Decor.

Miyuki is exhausted, but Wolfrun leaves. Everything returns to normal, and the people's despair is gone. Candy invites Miyuki to collect the Cure Decors with her and ultimately save Märchenland. Miyuki isn't sure what she's getting herself in for, but agrees anyway, predicting that something "happy" is in her future.

Trivia[]

  • In the title card animation, when the Cures float into the book holding balloons, Yayoi is missing. This would not be corrected until episode 7.
  • This is the third time that the series mascot falls from the sky and hits the lead Cure in the face.
  • This is the third time that after transforming the lead Cure freaks out and can't use her powers right for a minute.
  • During the scene where Miyuki introduces herself to the class, Akane cracks a joke on Miyuki's family name by making up a little brother for Miyuki and calling him Hoshizora Mitaro. Hoshizora stands for "starry sky", mita means "to see (past tense)", and tarou is a common ending particle for male names. The joke was that the brother's name would mean "I saw the starry sky".
  • The first pink glowing book that caught Miyuki's attention in the library was aptly titled Fushigi na Tobira (ふしぎなとびら "Magical Door" or "Mysterious Door"?).
    • In the dub, it's titled The Library of Legends.
  • SmPC01 Overjoyed Happy
Error: At one point shortly after Miyuki transforms into Cure Happy, her ribbon is briefly the wrong color, appearing pale pink instead of dark pink.
  • Miyuki in this episode is shown to be completely immune to the effects of Bad Energy. The other four Pretty Cures are briefly affected before overcoming it. Only one other human character in the series is shown to have similar immunity, Miyukis' grandmother.

Edits in Glitter Force[]

  • At the beginning of the episode, a scene of the girls posing is removed.
  • An extra scene, in the beginning, is added, which features Emily dreaming of transforming into the Glitter Force with the rest of her friends.
    • When Emily meets the other four girls at school, clips of them performing their roll call are added.
      • One of these shots has Glitter Peace saying, "We want peace! Glitter Peace!" She never says this outside of the dream, but the phrase is the English title of the third episode.
  • A shot of Miyuki panicking and trying to get herself to say something to the class is removed.
    • After this, Miyuki stuttering her introduction is changed to Emily saying the Pledge of Allegiance, which implies that the show takes place in the United States rather than Japan.
  • Kelsey introduces herself and the other protagonists differently than Akane does.
    • While Akane makes a pun on Miyuki's name, Kelsey says that Emily is bad at public speaking, is pleased to meet everyone, and waves her hands a lot.
    • In the original, Akane calls Nao a gangster, and Nao protests that she's not. In Glitter Force, Kelsey says April is tougher than most of the boys in the class, and April says she's not that tough.
    • In the original, Akane says that the boys think Reika is a hottie, which shocks Reika. In the dub, Kelsey says that Chloe is scarily perfect and Chloe says she's not perfect.
    • Kelsey exaggerates Lily more than how Akane introduces Yayoi. Kelsey says almost anything makes Lily cry. Lily defends herself by saying she never cries, maybe once, three times at the very most. In the Japanese version, Akane says Yayoi cries at the slightest nudge, then Yayoi tells Akane not to talk about her like that since she only cried three times today.
  • When Emily is sucked into the bookcase portal, a dialogue is added where she says, "Emily, you're not in Kansas anymore!" from The Wizard of Oz.
  • The entire scene of Candy running through the school is replaced with Queen Euphoria (Royale Queen) telling Emily the backstory of the series in the Library of Legends (Magical Library).
  • Wake Up, Shake Up, which uses Full Bloom*Smile's dance ending (ver. Cure Happy), debuts as the ending song. This continues for the next three episodes.
  • During parts of the opening, and parts of Emily's transformation and attack sequences, the screen is darkened heavily, possibly to reduce the risk of viewers having seizures or any other eye problems from the bright or flashing colors. This continues for the rest of the following episodes.
