Personality[]

Mofurun is a warm-hearted, soft spoken companion. She can be curious, gluttonous, and simple-minded, and gets sad and worried during serious moments. She also has a responsible side, worrying about Mirai's well-being, looking after Ha-chan, and helping out Mirai and Riko during their magic classes.

Gender[]

During the initial airing of Mahou Tsukai for the first few months, Mofurun's gender was not explicitly stated. That changed when the season's film was announced in July, where in it, Mofurun would transform into a Pretty Cure, and at the time, such a thing was usually limited to female characters.

According to the film's director, Tanaka Yuta, it was shared from the TV anime staff that Mofurun's gender was simply "Mofurun," and the film staff ran with that idea to design Cure Mofurun more androgynously, with her wearing pumpkin pants instead of skirts like most other Pretty Cure.[1] Several other staff members, such as character designer Miyamoto Emiko,[2] film producer Kaminoki Yuu,[3] TV anime producer Naito Keisuke, and series director Mitsuka Masato,[4] have all reaffirmed Mofurun's androgyny. In 2019, when the official Pretty Store Twitter account promoted a lineup of plushies featuring female mascot characters, of which Mofurun was included, they later clarified that as Mofurun's gender is "Mofurun," she can be either a boy, girl, or neither.[5]

However, according to series head writer Murayama Isao, Mofurun was set to be a girl from the start, and he had a scene in mind where Mirai, who would have treated Mofurun like a boy the entire time, gets shocked when Mofurun, now able to speaks, says "Mofurun is a girl-mofu!" Due to time constraints, he was unable to include a scene in the anime commenting on Mofurun's gender (pg. 79).[6]

Relationships[]

  • Asahina Mirai: Mofurun is Mirai's teddy bear, given to her by her grandmother on her first birthday. They are very close, and consider each other as sisters.
  • Izayoi Riko: Through Mirai, Mofurun gets to befriend Riko. They share a special bond due to their connection with magic.
  • Ha-chan: Mofurun is close with Ha-chan since Ha-chan's birth, acting as her caretaker. She is always by Ha-chan's side during rough times.
  • Chikurun: Despite Chikurun's rudeness, Mofurun is very kind towards them. Even when Chikurun is exposed as Orba's spy, Mofurun refuses to abandon Chikurun, which finally earns her respect from the bee fairy.
  • Kumata: Mofurun trusts Kumata almost immediately, and is quick to become his friend. She is horrified to realize that he is Dark Matter, but still believes there is good inside him. She forgives him in the end, and is happy for him when he finally gets accepted by the other bears.

Etymology[]

"Mofu" means "fluff" and "run" could just be a suffix to make it into a name.

Abilities[]

Before the show began, Mofurun had no known abilities due to being a stuffed bear but when gaining the ability to talk, a good sense for magic is gained as well. Mofurun is somehow able to sense the presence of Linkle Stones, commenting on a 'sweet smell' when detecting them, which in turn alerts the girls. Mofurun also helps transform the girls when the Linkle Stones are inserted into her pink brooch that is on her bow. For that, one needs to hold Mofurun's paws.

After the girls obtain the Rainbow Carriage, Mofurun gains the ability to also sense the Linkle Stones' Spirits.

History[]

Mofurun was given to Mirai by her grandmother when she was born before the season's events. Mirai treasured Mofurun greatly but eventually longed to speak to her. Mofurun was just a plush toy bear but gained the ability to move on her own and talk after helping Mirai and Riko transform into Pretty Cure. She mentions that she is excited to be able to speak to Mirai for the first time and even desired to talk to her just like Mirai did.

Throughout the first half of the season, Mofurun helps Mirai and Riko detect the Linkle Stones and acts as their transformation item. She also acts as Ha-chan's caretaker. She is devastated when Ha-chan goes missing after Dokurokushe is purified, but like Mirai and Riko, Mofurun is overjoyed to have Ha-chan, who has helped them as Cure Felice, back.MTPC22

When Ha-chan is reunited with the girls and Mofurun, Mofurun feels that she isn't useful and helpful enough to help the girls. However, with Mirai's encouragement, Mofurun regains confidence in herself.MTPC24 Mofurun later realizes Ha-chan is upset for feeling like a burden after she noticed Ha-chan having sneaked away from home and went all the way to find her, and is terrified when she witnesses Yamoh capturing Ha-chan. She is relieved and happy when Ha-chan finally returns to her and the girls' side.MTPC25

Mofurun later becomes the main character of the Cinderella story as Mofuruderella, but is unable to remember the three girls. She is also mistreated by Gamettsu, Sparda and Batty. The girls decide to help Mofurun achieve her wish of going to the ball and meeting the Prince. Mofuderella ends up reverting, but realizes she is actually destined to be a magician. With this adventure, Mofurun ends up changing the Chinderella story for it to become about her, which she is fine with.MTPC29

Since episode 31, Mofurun is involved with the Rainbow Carriage as part of the Extreme Rainbow attack. She also gains the ability to notice the Spirits of the Linkle Stones.

In episode 36, Mofurun meets Chikurun, who is the culprit behind the missing pancakes. Mofurun quickly believes Chikurun's made-up backstory, and considers Chikurun her friend, even though Chikurun refuses to acknowledge her kind gesture. Orba, who has learned about Mofurun from Chikurun, almost lays his hands on Mofurun to hurt her, but the Cures manage to rescue Mofurun just in time. Mofurun and the girls then watch the flower field with Chikurun, still unaware of Chikurun being a spy.

During Halloween, Mofurun and the girls join the race to catch the Pumpkin Bird. However, she notices that the Pumpkin Bird isn't feeling too well. She then approaches the Pumpkin Bird, who is hurt by Shakince, and after checking on them, she realizes they have a cavity. By pulling out the Pumpkin Bird's ruined tooth, Mofurun automatically becomes the winner of the competition.MTPC38

During their time learning how to make honey pudding with Liz at the Magic School, Mofurun and the girls want to give Chikurun some of their puddings. However, they soon realize their Linkle Stones have been stolen, and finally is told by Shakince that Chikurun that Chikurun is a spy for the Never Ending Chaos. But Mofurun, along with the Cures, refuse to leave Chikurun behind. Chikurun finally understands Mofurun's friendship, and returns them the favor.MTPC42 Mofurun and the girls then bid Chikurun farewell after returning Chikurun to the Fairy Village.MTPC43

When Orba turns the girls into little children, Mofurun is shocked, but still responsibly looks after them regardless of the troubles they've caused for her. She has to pretend that Mirai is sick to avoid Mirai's mother's suspicions. She tries to protect the girls, but is overpowered by Sparda easily, until the girls transform and return to their normal ages to save her, much to her relief. MTPC44

In the movie, Mofurun is chosen by the Wishing Stone, although she doesn't know what to wish for. She is then captured by Dark Matter, before she ends up falling into a forest where many bears live. She then meets Kumata and befriends him, until he reveals himself to her as Dark Matter. Wanting to protect the girls, especially Mirai, Mofurun's wish is granted by the Wishing Stone, which becomes her Linkle Stone, turning her into Cure Mofurun. However, when she tries to hug Dark Matter, she loses her life due to Dark Matter severely injuring her by destroying her Linkle Stone. After the girls' love and faith revive Mofurun, Mofurun forgives Kumata and together with the Cures, Cure Mofurun saves the Magic World from Kumata's leftover dark magic. She then bids Kumata farewell and is happy for him to be accepted by the bears as their friend.

After the final battle against Deusmast, Mofurun and Mirai are separated from Riko and Ha-chan, and Mofurun is grateful for what the girls have given her, before she returns to being inanimate. However, she regains her magic and becomes alive again a few years later, and she and Mirai are finally reunited with Riko and Ha-chan as a family.MTPC49
