An Odd Pair! The Melody of the Heart! (でこぼこコンビ!心のメロディ! Dekoboko Konbi! Kokoro no Merodi!?) is the 18th episode of HUGtto! Pretty Cure and is the 702nd episode of the Pretty Cure franchise overall.

Summary[]

Ruru continues to live with the Nono family and attend school, and in this time she learns what it means to have a heart. Meanwhile, Emiru confronts the girls having just learned their secret and she gets to know them in hopes of learning more.

Synopsis[]

As the girls are heading home, Harry attempts to get some information about the Criasu Corp out of Ruru- unfortunately anything confidential had been erased from her mind so she can't tell them anything they don't already know. She goes on to bring up how she plans on returning Hana's mom back to normal now, so chances are she won't be welcomed back into their home. However, she learns this is far from the truth when the Nono family suddenly show up, having been worried about the girls. She undoes her brainwashing of Sumire, leading her to recall when they met, but she happily embraces both girls.

Ruru remains confused as they begin to eat the curry dinner she prepared for the family. She was trying to make something else, which explains the unusual ingredients she used in it, but she believes that most things can be restarted. This eases Ruru's mind and she begins to eat, but she remains confused as evening comes along. She expresses this to Hana, who believes her mother truly loves her to have forgiven her for what happened.

Meanwhile, Emiru is so disturbed over what she recently found out that she's unable to sleep for some time. The following day she writes a note for Hana and leaves it on her desk, asking that she comes to see her in the courtyard during lunch. Saaya and Homare also received them, and when lunch comes along the girls step outside to wait for Emiru. They are confused to see her donning the homemade Pretty Cure costume and is about to reveal their secret, which causes them to panic and attempt to stop her as several onlookers observe them. She is silenced by Ruru and they tape her mouth, rushing her to Beauty Harry.

There, Ruru points out what she saw, including the fact they have an overly chatty "mouse". Harry shows offense to this and ends up blowing his cover as she goes on to express how much she loves heroic figures and wants to become one. She admits to being shocked to learn Hana of all people was part of the team she adores so much, but it's of little importance. She asks the girls if she can hang out with them for the remainder of the day to see what sort of things they do.

At the ice skating rink she admires Homare's grace as the Coach gives her some instructions. However, she notices that Ruru seems to be confused or concerned by something. This continues as they watch Saaya practice her acting by the lake until Hana runs to them to beg for help. She reveals that in singing class there is a test coming up and she needs help practicing for it, so they return to school and Emiru plays the piano while Hana awkwardly sings. Emiru corrects her and manages to impress everyone with her vast music knowledge, explaining how she's been learning since she was little. She loves music very much because of how free it allows one's heart to feel. With that the girls suggest Ruru take's a turn. She proceeds to do so and manages to sing it precisely, but it doesn't resonate within the heart. Words that cause Ruru great distress to the point of fainting.

In the nurses office Emiru awaits for Ruru to wake up as she recalls what the girls told her earlier. Having to learn that Ruru was actually an android so suddenly was concerning, but she expresses relief when Ruru suddenly wakes up. She asks how she is feeling before bringing up what the girls told her, then she asks for proof. Ruru complies once more and Emiru asks that they have no more secrets between them as they are best friends. Ruru is confused as she goes on to say they should work towards becoming Pretty Cure together, and she compliments Ruru for being pretty and kind, and having a big heart. She's sure they can be- but Ruru thinks it is impossible as she isn't a human. She feels envious whenever she sees Emiru's heart, one that is sweet and hardworking.

Outside of the room, the trio watch them with concern. They want to help Ruru seeing how troubled she is, but they are unsure of how to go about it.

At home, Emiru lays in bed as she thinks about playing music to Ruru for the first time. She gets up to get her guitar when her brother suddenly shows up, telling her that they have some cake. He takes off requesting she make some tea for it. Afterwards, she takes her guitar to Beauty Harry and plays for him, Hugtan, Hana, and Homare. While she impresses them, Harry complains about her playing it there until she explains that she can't play at home due to Masato and how he dislikes it. Harry believes his ideals are old-fashioned, but he asks her why she wants to play if that is the case. Emiru explains how much she likes it and she wants to make Ruru feel better, but she's unsure if its enough. Hana manages to encourage her by bringing up that its her feelings that matter. If this doesn't work then she knows Emiru will keep trying, and she will gladly encourage her to keep going.

At the lake Ruru attempts to practice the song more, but she's unable to feel the heart in it. Saaya understands and recalls that when she overthinks things, such as a new role she is trying for she ends up struggling to do well. But when you do it without giving it too much thought, then the feelings come pouring out and the performance seems to go better. Force isn't needed, because the heart will flow whether one stops it or lets it.

Just then they hear a sound in the distance, Papple has summoned an Oshimaida from a fashion designer. The five girls rush to the location, the trio transforming into Cure Yell, Ange, and Etoile to fight it off as Emiru and Ruru watch. As the girls do battle Ruru attempts to help them by reading the Oshimaida to determine what it will do next, but Papple begins to discourage her, reminding her of her evil past and how she's nothing more then a heartless doll for them to use. Seeing her distress causes Emiru to come to her defense, and she tells off Papple for belittling Ruru and their friendship. Cure Yell comes to their defense when she angrily tells the Oshimaida to attack them, and together with Etoile and Ange they use Trinity Concert.

The girls admire the sunset once everything returns to normal, while Emiru admires Pretty Cure. Ruru goes on to compliment her, much to her surprise.

The following day at Beauty Harry, Ruru and Emiru sit alone and Emiru reveals she added lyrics to the song she's been playing for Ruru. She requests that she sing it with her and Ruru is very touched, and as Emiru begins to play her guitar and sing, she finds herself relaxing as it resonates within her heart. The girls, Harry, Hugtan, and Henri -who was walking nearby- stop to listen to them.
